Larry Elder is one of the best conservative writers out there. I have read all of his books and enjoy his thought process. He never pulls any punches. He gives Black people a much needed wake up call. The old adage of pulling oneself up by their boot strap is his basic premise.
My wakeup call happened years ago with Jesse Lee Peterson, the incendiary preacher. I read his book Scam and agreed with about 95% of that book. He touched on the hallmarks of Black conservatism. His books covered politics. Democrats versus Republican. He explained what the platforms were really about. I am in no way a religious conservative as Peterson is, nor am I enamored with any one party. I think both parties are licentious and corrupt to the inth degree. However, as stated in a previous post, ideally I do lean more Republican. In the last Presidential election you could not tell, though. I voted for Obama. I know, I know. How can I say I lean Republican, but voted for Obama? Well, I voted for him because I could not stand Sarah Plain and believed John McCain should have chosen a better prepared running mate. I did like John McCain in 2000, but in 2008 the thrill was gone.
Jesse Lee Peterson also talked about so called Black Leadership. You know, the ones I call the usual suspects. Jesse the baby daddy Jackson, Al the perm Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan, who strangely, I have not found a negative appellation for. He talked about how these people run our communities and how they became our unelected, yet appointed leaders. Now how did that happen? These men have a kind of control over us and want to guide us, but I don’t know where they are taking us. Larry Elder also brought up these characters to make similar points about leadership in the Black Community (BC).
Personally, I don’t believe there is any leadership in the BC. If there were the majority of our homes would not be headed by single women. These leaders would not allow men to walk away from their responsibilities. Nor would they allow women to be brood mares for these men. Then you think about why the last time I saw JJ on TV, he was again shedding crocodile tears for the casket of slain teenager Emmitt Till. They gave this idiot TV time to express his anger that Till’s casket was being allowed to rot and was not being preserved and placed in a Civil Rights Museum. Is he kidding? Why is JJ allowing the BC to rot? Why is he contributing to the moral decay? Why is he not out here trying to make positive change in the BC? Instead Jackson is just like every other no good Black preacher; he’s trying to make a dollar.
Then there is Al Sharpton. Rev. Al’s latest donation to the BC was helping to plan Michael Jackson’s memorial service. I loved MJ’s music. Some would have thought I was borderline insane when it came to him, but this was not something AS should have been involved in. How could AS’s speaking after the death of MJ help the BC? It couldn’t. He immediately took the public stage and began to extol the wonderful virtues of Michael Jackson.
Then there was the Jena Six fiasco of a few years prior that really cemented by dislike of the Civil Rights Fools. They, AS and others took to the streets to fight for the rights of “wrongly jailed” Michael Bell and his friends. While in Cleveland on the same weekend AS had Negroes fired up to go on a march to freedom, a little girl was being buried because she was shot by criminals who decided to have a shoot out on a city street during daylight. That was a big story here, but we had fools and followers who left Cleveland on a bus to set Michael Bell et.al. free, while little Astevia was being buried.
Louis Farrakhan. I believe the reason I have not come up with a name for him is because he is a little more palatable than the others, but not by much. Farrakhan will always have my respect for demanding that Blacks get up and do something. Get married, create a business, employee others, create a better community. But he lost cool points when he went to New Orleans and said Whites blew up the lower Ninth Ward. He went to NO with some tomfoolery that he knew the people would eagerly gobble up. Instead of him saying to the victims this too shall pass, then give them lessons on how to make it pass; he went down there and decided to stir up ish. That storm, no matter how you look at it was not White or Black. It was tragic.
Larry Elder has never said that racism is dead or that it every going to be 100% eradicated. What he has said is that it is not hiding behind every rock, nor is everything a White person says a code for racist behavior. We, as African Americans must stop believing that everything done by a White person is racist. This is the lesson Larry Elder is trying to teach.
It is about time we have heard a new message. A message that has not been tainted by the liberals and other people who don’t have our best interests in mind. It seems most people have a problem in telling Black people their behavior is unacceptable. There are the Civil Rights crew, the Intellectual Gaggles, the Green Flight Brigade and the everyday Hood Dweller. No one seems to be speaking up to let them know their behavior leaves much to be desired. Along comes the Sage from South Central, Thomas Sowell and even Internet bloggers I follow they have no problem in letting us know what’s wrong and how to prevent it. Elder always says the way to not become impoverished is to finish high school, get married, delay having babies until after 21 and you are almost guaranteed a life of being middle class. What is so hard about following that advice? It is very sage advice. It makes sense and it works. I know because I did two out of three of his admonitions.
While this was not the best book by Elder, nor was the message as fresh; it still deserves a mention because everything he says is always on the money.
